Green Square Town Centre Library, Sydney, NSW

The Green Square Town Centre Library was part of an initiative to redevelop a 278-hectare area by integrating Sydney’s diverse urban and commercial spaces in the city’s south. Stewart Hollenstein in association with Stewart Architecture won the AR Review Library Award for this prestigious project.

The library comprises a 3000m² underground structure serving as a resource centre for education and creativity. The building is shaped with geometric elements extending into an 8000m² plaza that is filled with trees for shade, moveable chairs and a lawn for recreation.

Project Design Brief

Significant cabling to be used for lighting, communications and CCTV was required to be run beneath the plaza surface. Service pits were therefore required and designers wanted them to have a minimal visual impact on the new pavements. The plaza would also be exposed to service vehicles requiring all access covers to be load rated.
